Downloads: Uploads: | I don't know If I should be asking this here, so please forgive me if I shouldn't..<grin> To pre-empt my question... I have my own Linux server at home where I used to host COD4 for friends (5 seemed to be the limit due to bandwidth), but the download speed of maps etc was way too slow. So I decided to purchase a COD4 Hosting pack... all good.... Nice fast redirects, custom mods and maps etc... but, the server was not listed on the in game internet games server. So, decided to change providers after my subscription was up... found a nice one, well within budget, and straight away, was listed in the "in game" server list, got loads of players.... according to gametracker has over Read more on: : i3D.net Game Forums /call-duty-series-newsletter/64383-cod-cod4-server-hosting-recommendations.html 17000 individual player names in 4 months.... my own rcon has tracked over 8000 GUID's (mine is only on when my pc is on - see earlier post... it's getting their... but still in alpha testing) But custom maps and mods are nearly impossible to get up and running.... only conclusion I can come to is the host is windows based and not Linux. The tech support is excellent, but I don't have the time to go back and forth through tech support whenever I want to try a new mod, especially when I can get the same mod working on my Linux server.... So, my dilemma.... I would like a host with fast redirects, Linux based, will be listed on the "in game" server list, unbranded, public server, and team speak to boot. So, can any one point me in the right direction? Any recommendations on game hosts? Downloads: Uploads: | Google "dedicated server provider", any provider worth their salt will offer linux servers. Find one in the location you want your server, or somewhere central (Texas, Chicago) if you've got people all over the country (or world). Rudedog @ FPSAdmin (and frequent contributor here) recommends Server Beach: http://www.fpsadmin.com/sb/ I host Ventrilo and Teamspeak commercially and personally recommend SoftLayer: http://www.softlayer.com I'd recommend you get 64 bit OS, pick something with good long term support like CentOS or Ubuntu LTS (LTS = Long Term Support), or something easy to upgrade remotely. As for Teamspeak, expect this to change when 3.0 comes out, but currently you can host your own for non-profit use up to 100 slots. Make sure you read the licensing agreement closely, they will blacklist you if you violate it. Good luck! Downloads: Uploads: | Last time I looked into it the TS website said up to 1000 slots or 10, 100 slot servers as long as you're not charging anything for the access and do not exceed 10 instances or 1000 slots your fine hosting TS. Which means you cannot request donations from your clan/guild members. http://www.teamspeak.com/?page=faq&c...o_needs_to_pay If a totally dedicated server isn't what your after I personally have used http://www.clanwarz.com/ Everything they offer is on Linux based servers and has nice webmin interface. But they didn't have a fast redirect option. That however can be purchased from almost any webhost. Last I knew Dixiesys.com had a "File Hosting" plan that gave tons of space and transfer for a decent price. All you need is a cheap domain name, or do like I did simply create a subdomain of my clans existing domain (if you have one) and point it at the hosting space and use that for fast redirects. So, decided to change providers after my subscription was up... found a nice one, well within budget, and straight away, was listed in the "in game" server list, got loads of players.... according to gametracker has over 17000 individual player names in 4 months.... my own rcon has tracked over 8000 GUID's (mine is only on when my pc is on - see earlier post... it's getting their... but still in alpha testing) But custom maps and mods are nearly impossible to get up and running....
