CTD and artifacts

Hi all, hallo allemaal,

I'll state my problem and ways i tried to clear it in English for the benefit of all, hopefully.

Short description of problem:

Battlefield Crashes to Desktop after connecting and entering server, sometimes it freezes with the soundloop, sometimes ctd when playing after 3mins. There are also black triangular artifacts in the screen when playing.

Let me emphasize that I did a reinstall of my no servicepack windows XP to a windows with SP3. Before this my BF2 ran great on medium specs!

Short setup list (dxdiag and everest specs list follow):

Medion MD8000 PC
2.66 processor
1 gb ram
Nvidia clone Xpertvision 6800 GS 256 mb (197.45 driver)
WinXP SP3

After the reinstall I updated to the latest Nvidia driver installed battlefield, patched it and updated Punkbuster.

On same in-game videosettings started the game, which is 1440-900 DPI, rest on medium, lighting/shadows off, no anti-alliassing (before also didnt work), no smoothing.

Then it either:

- freezes on kitselection (with soundloop) at game join, needing a hard reset.

- just crashes to desktop, no explanation.

Both with large visible triangular artifacts in screen, BF2 did this the exact same way in all patchstages.

What i tried already (been at it 5 nights straight):
(in order if possible)

- Deinstalling entire BF2
- Reinstalling windows 3 times (though with SP3, only one i got)
- Flashed my Bios in the process
- Changed AGP aperturesizes to all and to original
- Back to Nvidia Driver 197.21 (which worked earlier on no-sp3 setup)
- Every setting imaginable in BF2
- VOIP on/off, EAX on/off, harware rendering on/off
- all possible resolutions, detailsettings
- renamed movies and removed shadercache (also after each patch)
- Installing Forceware pack and changing settings + changing back.
- DirectX update, and back.
- Modded Nvidia drivers for BF2 (also exact same prob)
- I changed from USB keyboard to PS2
- Tried with and without different frameworks

What did I miss...read all manuals and tried all i think any more ideas? Could it be SP3?

After trying an overclock with Forceware (went to optimized) it set itself back, are these settings restored after Windows reinstall? I would guess so.

What i'm guessing is my prev working setup was only working with the driver delivered with the game. This one doesnt work on windows version SP3.

Cant undo SP3, is in whole pack.

Strange thing is, problem doesnt change even a little with every try, the artifacts are even in exact same place.

Anyone any ideas please, I would have given up, weren't it for the fact I am sure it can run, because it did.

Addendum1:

Earlier had the refreshrate crash in Menu or Load.
Off course put my monitor res and hz as well as in game res and hz on same, currently 1024/768 x 60hz. Now game always makes it through menu and even into game.

In previous working setup ow WINXP/BF2 it didnt matter that my desktop was on 1440/900 and game on lower res. Now it seems to matter. Crash appears later with lower res settings.

Of course tried the eventlog. No problems seen after several crashes. Last known message (not every time) PNKBSTR started succesfully.

One more note of concern:

When I reinstalled (twice) I didnt posses the Medion Recovery/driver cd. I went to Medion and entered my S/N and recovered all available drivers and tools there and of course installed them. Could ive missed something like my sis drivers twice?

Addendum 2:

Tried the fullscreen -0 option:

800x600 low specs

game doesn't freeze, there were artifacts though.

Then reset my res to 1024x786, medium specs.

If anyones interested, I solved the problem. Its running better then ever with the new Nvidia drivers. Had to use a whole different publish of XP, but its working thank Me. Many thanks for the help though....ah wait no, did it myself....

Short description of problem: Battlefield Crashes to Desktop after connecting and entering server, sometimes it freezes with the soundloop, sometimes ctd when playing after 3mins. There are also black triangular artifacts in the screen when playing. Let me emphasize that I did a reinstall of my no servicepack windows XP to a windows with SP3. Before this my BF2 ran great on medium specs! Short setup list (dxdiag and everest specs list follow): Medion MD8000 PC 2.66 processor 1 gb ram Nvidia clone Xpertvision 6800 GS 256 mb (197.45 driver) WinXP SP3 After the reinstall I updated to the latest Nvidia driver installed battlefield, patched it and updated Punkbuster. On same in-game videosettings started the game, which is 1440-900 DPI, rest on medium, lighting/shadows off, no anti-alliassing (before also didnt work), no smoothing. Then it either: - freezes on kitselection (with soundloop) at game join, needing a hard reset. - just crashes to desktop, no explanation. Both with large visible triangular artifacts in screen, BF2 did this the exact same way in all patchstages. What i tried already (been at it 5 nights straight): (in order if possible) - Deinstalling entire BF2 - Reinstalling windows 3 times (though with SP3, only one i got) - Flashed my Bios in the process - Changed AGP aperturesizes to all and to original - Back to Nvidia Driver 197.21 (which worked earlier on no-sp3 setup) - Every setting imaginable in BF2 - VOIP on/off, EAX on/off, harware rendering on/off - all possible resolutions, detailsettings - renamed movies and removed shadercache (also after each patch) - Installing Forceware pack and changing settings + changing back. - DirectX update, and back. - Modded Nvidia drivers for BF2 (also exact same prob) - I changed from USB keyboard to PS2 - Tried with and without different frameworks What did I miss...read all manuals and tried all i think any more ideas? Could it be SP3? After trying an overclock with Forceware (went to optimized) it set itself back, are these settings restored after Windows reinstall? I would guess so. What i'm guessing is my prev working setup was only working with the driver delivered with the game. This one doesnt work on windows version SP3. Cant undo SP3, is in whole pack. Anyone any ideas please, I would have given up, weren't it for the fact I am sure it can run, because it did. Thanks in advance. Off course put my monitor res and hz as well as in game res and hz on same, currently 1024/768 x 60hz. Now game always makes it through menu and even into game. In previous working setup ow WINXP/BF2 it didnt matter that my desktop was on 1440/900 and game on lower res. Now it seems to matter. Crash appears later with lower res settings. Last known message (not every time) PNKBSTR started succesfully. One more note of concern: When I reinstalled (twice) I didnt posses the Medion Recovery/driver cd. I went to Medion and entered my S/N and recovered all available drivers and tools there and of course installed them. Could ive missed something like my sis drivers twice?
