How to install maps and addons (.VPK)

Installing and playing custom Left 4 Dead maps is very easy and can be completed in minutes.

Download the archive.
Installation paths may differ based on your system configuration.
- Place the .vpk file into your L4D addons folder
  C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\addons\

2. Load your map / campaign from the L4D Add-ons menu and play!

How to Play Custom Maps in Multiplayer (.VPK)

The host creator must download and install the .VPK file.
Installation paths may differ based on your system configuration.
Create a lobby as a 'Add-on Campaign / Map' and start the game!

Your friends can now join your game and the maps will automatically download!

How to install maps and campaigns (.BSP, .NAV)
Installing and playing custom Left 4 Dead maps is very easy and can be completed in minutes.

Install the Left 4 Dead map or campaign
Installation paths may differ based on your system configuration.
- Place the .bsp and .nav file in your Left 4 Dead maps folder.
  Do not place the .zip file in your /maps/ folder or it will not work.
  
  C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\maps\
Play the custom map or campaign.
Open console ~ and type "map map_name".
- If you load a survival map and it does not begin in survival mode.
  - Open console and type "mp_gamemode survival"

DevPacks contain additional files and folders which may need to be installed.

Install the custom map / campaign.
You can optionally install only the core map files, however models and textures will be missing during play.
- Copy the required files to your Left 4 Dead directory.
  C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\This directory contains a materials, models, missions etc... Copy the contained files into the appropriate folders.
Play the custom map or campaign.
Open console ~ and type "map map_name".

How to enable your L4D console.
Generally DevPacks are save, however always take cautionary steps and review / check all DevPacks before installing them.
Unauthorized changes to any core L4D files and components may be prohibited by Valve which may return undesired results.

How to play custom L4D maps in multiplayer. (.BSP)

Multiplayer Custom Maps (.BSP)
Play custom left 4 dead maps with your friends by creating a public server and using the changelevel console command. (changelevel map_name)

First create a Local Server Lobby that your friends can join and play.
Your friends must have the same maps installed in order for you to play them multiplayer.
Start the game with your friends or have them join after.

Enable Left 4 Dead Developer Console

Enabling L4D Console
Access the console by pressing the ~ key. You must have this option enabled in your game control settings. (see below)

Once enabled, you can load maps and use developer commands.

map map_name (Loads the map of your choice.)

Left 4 Dead Cvar / Cheats List

The L4D Cvar list can be a helpful tool when playing, testing or developing maps.
You may use any of the following commands to modify or alter your gameplay experience. To enable cheats open console and type "sv_cheats 1".
