Why?
Reading the feedback you guys give us in the gaming forums, it’s been clear to us that the game was lacking in a tight infantry map with the PLA army involved. So we set out to create a map with that in mind and this is the result of that. That map, which we have called Operation Blue Pearl, will appear in the upcoming Battlefield 2 Update 1.50 and Battlefield 2142 Update 1.51.

Limitations
As some of you probably know, BF2 has been around for a while and many of the current players have rigs that can run the game at high settings. But to us, creating official content, we still have to keep the low specs of the game in mind designing a map.

That’s where the “fog of war” comes in. When we make maps here at DICE we are constantly using programs that check draw-calls on our maps so that, wherever you position yourself on the map, the draw-calls never exceed the maximum limit. (A draw-call is when the game engine must call a texture image into the graphic card’s memory for it to be rendered on screen. The more draw-calls the game must make, the more it impacts computer performance so limiting these is one of the cornerstones of game production.)

In order to make a tight city-feel map you need a certain object density. The only way to get that is to use fog to “cull” distant objects.

This also prohibits us from using air vehicles on this kind of map. On ground level, your view is often blocked by buildings and other objects, keeping the draw-calls in check. If you would use an air vehicle you would get a free 180’ view of the city which would make the draw-calls exceed the maximum number.

The setting
Even though this new map reuse all content from the original game we’ve tried to come up with something that we hope will feel fresh for you. As already mentioned the map gives you an infantry, city setting with the PLA army, which hasn’t been present in the game before.

We’ve also dug deep in the vaults of what we’ve got here at DICE and tried to bring up some of the objects that weren’t used as frequently in the original release, spotlighting these to hopefully give you a new experience.

We here at DICE also felt that BF2 lacked a map with a beach landing scenario – like “Omaha Beach” in BF 1942. That’s why we’ve made this map into a beach landing and hopefully you guys will enjoy that experience.

Feedback from beta testing
As we roll this map out in open beta we are very interested to know what you players out there think about it. Can we make changes that would make the map better and of course, find any bugs left in the map. If you’re interested in making this map a better experience for all, please give us feedback.

Going into a feedback session there are a few things that have to be kept in mind. The main thing is to understand what experience this map wants to convey – a grinding, hard push of infantry fighting through an urban setting. I.e. – that map should be fun to play as infantry. That’s its main focus. The vehicles in there should add a flavour to the map, but not ruin the infantry experience.

With that said, our main questions are:

Does the beach landing work?
For the landing to work it’s absolutely crucial that the US troops don’t get owned by PLA AT:s. We know this is a risk and that’s one of the main feedback points we need to get from you guys – is the beach landing successful. Keep in mind it should be hard, but not impossible and boring.

Is it too easy to back-cap the Chinese home base?
With an assault map, the experience we’re looking for is a gradual grind that slowly moves the battle to the back of the map. We’ve left a sneak hole to get past the front in case the front flag is to heavily defended, but this shouldn’t be a too easy way.

Bugs
These annoyances always seem to sneak through. There will be areas where you can get stuck, get into objects and so on. Please, feedback on these too.

Ik hoop dat dan dat de LAn het ook weer doet.
Namelijk als je geen internetconnectie hebt en alleen maar LAN wilt gebruiken voor je server dan wilt ie niet connecten., we zullen zien wat voor moois het weer wordt.

krijgen we nu ook china en amerika als teams in bf2142??? moeten ze dan weer andere wapens ontwikkelen dan dat de pac en de eu hebben??? is er al overige info bekend of is dit gewoon een vals bericht???

Het bericht is niet vals, maar klopt inderdaad niet. Het gegeven is wel geldig voor Battlefield 2. Uiteraard komt het speelveld wel naar Battlefield 2142, maar het zal natuurlijk gebruik maken van haar eigen facties die aanwezig zijn in de game.

New BF2142 Patch



Associate Producer, Barry Tingle stated on the EA UK forums that a Battlefield 2142 patch is in the works, although a release date is unknown.
That is part of the patch yes. [No DVD fix] I can't give you a date on when it will be done but programmers are still working on it here. Localisation has been completed and we have been in closed beta for a couple of weeks and fixing some issues that came up in those tests.

Localisation is due to us making the game in English and then the localisation process is where every other language gets translated and approved for use.So it goes out to each territory to get the game transalted to French, German, Spanish etc etc. Takes ages to do

The Battlefield 2142 v1.51 patch has not been forgotten, but we do have some new details on what it will include. We will be seeing two new maps in addition to Blue Pearl and Northern Strike will now be free. A Battlefield 2142 Deluxe Edition will make its way to Steam and Direct2Drive also.

Trying to get the programmer back on BF2142 still, he is being tied up on BFBC2 PC version.

As for the changelist you know this is a small update in terms of fixes and is aimed at adding more security fixes onto accounts to stop spoofing.

Other things you will see are:
  • No DRM method on the exe as with BF2 (No more SafeDisc, PACE or SecuROM (depending on which version of BF2142 you have) and no more errors from EADM saying you need to log in to EADM to verify ownership even if you are logged in)
  • Operation Blue Pearl
  • Two brand new maps from community modder Jason Brice (more on this later)
  • Northern Strike will be available to EVERYONE
Also yes, BF2142 Deluxe Edition is heading to Steam and Direct2Drive (and all other online retailers you see selling BF2 Complete Collection) once BF2142 1.51 is done.

Is ie nu al uit of moet ie nog komen? Bij bf2 was het vet relax dat alle maps op eens gespeeld konden worden. Alleen vond ik de nieuwe map voor bf2 niet zo'n succes. Op bf2142 waar de infantry meer macht heeft zal dit ongetwijfeld anders zijn.

Over on the EA UK forums, DICE Associate Producer Barrie Tingle answered some more questions about the Battlefield 2142 v1.51 patch. Map designer, Jason Brice posted up two screenshots of one of the new maps included in the patch.

Update: More info on the map added below.
You will be glad to know that all of the maps fit with the Battlefield 2142 theme.

To answer some other questions:
  • Server stability fix is in BF2142 v1.51 so should see a stop to the crashing servers exploit
  • There is no release date yet because as I mentioned earlier, I'm waiting for the programmer from BFBC2. So until he is back on BF2142 I can't estimate how long he will take to finish the update. There has been closed beta testing of the update with Combat Studios which is why we know of the major loading bug we have to deal with.
  • Operation Blue Pearl is Assault Lines
  • There are currently no extra Titan maps included.
  • Mac. This process isn't done by DICE so we will leave 1.50 servers running for Mac players until 1.51 comes out for the Mac. Then all 1.50 ranked servers will be shut down.
  • crysis40 there are fixes, mainly around stability and account security. As previously mentioned 1.50 was the main BF2142 update. 1.51 is a minor increment update to fix the security issues. We just threw in 3 maps for you. Not too bad for an incremental update really.

THE MAP INDEED HAS A GOLIATH (although no flag can be capped by sitting in the Goliath)...A FEW MECS, AND A SPEEDER OR TWO. IT IS 64, 32, 16 ASSAULT LINES. I cannot reveal name at this time. (and no, I did not do Leipzig...all time favorites there).

As far as Titan maps, we did have one in the works, but most likely wont make the build, as it was submitted a little late. However, with the release of free Northern Strike Content, most (since they don't have NS) will be getting two new titan maps from that.

I will say that everyone should have the CORRECT build for 1.5, with northern strike included. This will make the install go much smoother...ya'all can get a head start on that now. Making a full patch for this would be difficult, as the current 1.51 build is around 1.1 gigs, which means a full patch would entail a couple gigs at least...way too big of a download.

Despite all of what you have heard, you are still in for some great surprises. I'm sure there will be some good/bad comments...Just remember this...

A lot of people have donated their time, and efforts to make this possible. Please have respect for all of us, as we did not GAIN anything financially from this experience...WE SIMPLY LOVE THE GAME, and WANT TO SEE PEOPLE CONTINUING THEIR FUN WITH 2142.

Battlefield 2142 update 1.51 is still in development, however the programmer required to finish the update is busy working with the team on finalising Battlefield Bad Company 2. Once BFBC2 is complete we will get the programmers time to finish the final bug fixes on Battlefield 2142.

Things we have left to address before release are:
  • Dedicated servers are listening on all ports for VoIP instead of the one port defined in serversettings.con
  • Running more than one server on a machine causes each connection to the additional servers to slow client loading. It can take up to 1 hour before the map loads.

These are bugs introduced in 1.51 changes and not existing bugs in 1.50 but we have to fix these before release.

As well as the update we will have the programmer create a new Battlefield 2142 Deluxe with 1.51 included for release on digital distribution systems beyond EA Download Manager. This will happen after 1.51 has been completed and released though.

But why a patch is needed for this? Why is it not possible to deliver up a miserable orbit editor? There would be a patch, that zsózsóért it would be possible to be extremely fond in order for us to pull even more leather down from the man with this. The ranked would be the treatment of new optional orbits in him in this.

So now that Bad Company 2 is out, when is the guy coming back to finish the patch. If I sound like a douchebag, I don't mean to. I really appreciate what you guys are doing for the game and how you keep it clean and keep it going. But at least an estimated release date would take some trouble off of all our minds. And thanks for the free Northern Strike.

Over on the EA UK Forums, DICE Associate Producer, Barrie Tingle posted some information about the Battlefield 2142 v1.51 patch, which has not been forgotten. Thanks BF-Games.
So what is happening with BF2142 1.51?

Well as you probably know I own BF2/2142 and now BFBC2 PC which currently needs a lot of TLC to get it up to standard.

That doesn't mean I have forgotten BF2142 v1.51 though. Niklas (the programmer) is with me on BFBC2 as well and is lined up to work on BF2142 once we can leave BFBC2 alone for a while on its own

As some might remember, our build machine HDD also died so Niklas is going to have to rebuild the build scripts for BF2142.

We do have some good content coming in 1.51 too including BF2142 version of Operation Blue Pearl, removal of SecuROM and Safedisc DRM from the exe file and some unmentioned content from Jason Brice who made us Operation Shingle (which he has also fixed the bridge glitch on).

So BF2142 v1.51 is at least a few months out but it is certainly still coming and we haven't forgotten about it.
