Crytek's Crysis sequel, the third game in the franchise, hits the PC, and consoles, some time in the future:

Electronic Arts Inc. announced today that it has agreed to a deal extension with Crytek GmbH, the award-winning developers of the Crysis universe, to publish Crysis 2. Renowned for their technical excellence, artistic craftsmanship and commitment to quality, Crytek is building Crysis 2 on their new state-of-the-art multiplatform game development solution CryENGINE 3 for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, the Playstation 3 computer entertainment system, and the PC.
“The development of Crysis 2 marks a major stepping stone for our studio,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek. “This is not only the next game in the Crysis franchise, it’s the first title we are developing for consoles and the first title being built on CryENGINE 3. Opmerkelijke woorden van de directeur van Crytek, Cevat Yerli. Tijdens een bespreking over het onlangs aangekondigde Crysis 2 wist hij te melden dat de game het onderste uit de kan zal halen op de PlayStation 3:

“There’s not much more you can do, and frankly the breakthrough was very recent, and otherwise we would’ve had a compromised strategy on the consoles, which we don’t have now. So I think we will still have an upside, but we’re touching the hardware limits already."

Het opmerkelijke aan dit bericht is dat toen de vraag werd gesteld in hoeverre de PlayStation 3 en de Xbox 360-versies zullen verschillen, Yerli het volgende antwoord gaf:

“Overall by the time the game ships it’ll be absolutely the same".

We zijn onderhand allemaal wel bekend met het grafische monster Crysis en dat deze game gebruik maakt van de CryENGINE 2. Zo heeft Crytek, het bedrijf verantwoordelijk voor Crysis, ook de CryENGINE 3 aangekondigd, welke geoptimaliseerd is voor de huidige next-gen consoles. We kunnen volgend jaar dan ook genieten van Crysis 2 op de Xbox 360 en PlayStation 3.

Na het tonen van de tech-demo van deze CryENGINE 3 heeft het natuurlijk niet lang geduurd voordat de eerste vergelijkingen opdoken, waarvan het merendeel slechts vergelijkingen door middel van screenshots betrof. De vergelijking hieronder is daarentegen bewonderenswaardig te noemen, aangezien deze perfect de verschillen laat zien tussen de CryENGINE 2 en de CryENGINE 3.

Let wel dat de grafische kwaliteit getoond in de tech-demo van de CryENGINE 3 niet representatief staat voor de uiteindelijke kwaliteit van Crysis 2 of elke andere game die gebruik mag maken van deze engine. Er zijn namelijk nog geen in-game beelden getoond van Crysis 2 en deze heeft nog een lange ontwikkelingstijd voor zich.

Crytek heeft via het Crymod-forum officieel bekend gemaakt dat de game Crysis 2 niet meer in 2009 zal gaan verschijnen. Het spel werd onlangs aangekondigd voor de PC, Xbox 360 en PlayStation 3 en zal voor het eerst ook naar de consoles gaan komen. Community manager McGinge laat weten dat fans niet teleurgesteld hoeven te zijn wegens de bekendmaking, die al verwacht werd. De game heeft flink wat ontwikkeltijd nodig en zal ongetwijfeld de moeite waard worden. De CryEngine moet de console graphics naar een hoger plan zien te brengen.

Crytek has announced that the wait for more info on Crysis 2 will soon be over, with the development studio to present exclusive details on the game on the EA GC Booth Stage at gamescom on Thursday August 20 at 3:15pm.

Hopefully this means we'll see the game in motion and get some insight into what to expect in regards to the storyline and how it links in with Crysis and Crysis Warhead. Look out for more on Crysis 2 next week.

Crytek and Electronic Arts have launched a new website which is obviously a teaser for their upcoming Crysis 2. It takes the guise of Crynet Systems, the fictional firm which created the game's nanosuits. It looks like players will get to use the upgraded Nanosuit 2 in the sequel. The website details the suits enhancements such as EMP shielding and overall increased performance in all areas of function (strength, armor, speed, and cloaking).

Also on the site are the two teaser videos shown the other day at GamesCom as well as new wallpapers showing off the Nanosuit 2.

Crytek is building Crysis 2 on their new state-of-the-art multiplatform game development solution CryENGINE 3. Executive producer Nathan Camarillo reveals in the latest PCGamer that the game will a "new style of jungle" and "is definitely far from tropical" while introducing "Crysis-style sandbox gameplay to a different, yet ultimately familiar environment." Crysis 2 will also feature "ncreased verticality" and improved enemy AI that will utilize its new surroundings.

EA's narrowed down the release dates for its big upcoming titles, including Crysis 2. EA CEO John Riccitiello revealed the news in a conference call to investors last night, which we listened into. Riccitiello said:

The big sequels as well as Medal of Honor and EA Sports MMA will all be released in FY2011, which runs from April 1, 2010 until March 31, 2011. The 12 month period will see EA release a great new version of Medal of Honor, a revitalized Need for Speed, Sims on console, FIFA in a World Cup year, an innovative and new take on Madden, Dead Space 2, Crysis... an MMA game, and many others.

It's the first time we've had any sort of date clarification for Crysis 2.
