Controlled by a group of evil Tikis, the animals in Donkey Kong Island have raided Donkey Kong's Banana Hoard and stolen his stash of bananas - and he understandably wants them back. Retro Studios brings Donkey Kong back in a new side-scrolling adventure with familiar characters and new levels that reignite the passion players had for the Super NES original.

• Retro Studios faithfully restores everything that made the original series great, from barrel cannons to mine carts, and then builds on those elements with stunning graphics and new layers of depth to the world and game play. The game offers the traditional side-scrolling experience everyone loved, but with levels created in fully rendered 3-D environments.
• Diddy Kong joins the quest. With his trusty backpack, he can produce a jet pack or Peanut Pop Guns to give Donkey Kong more abilities.
• For the first time ever, the franchise features the ability for two people to play together at the same time - one as Donkey Kong, one as Diddy Kong. Players can navigate the levels separately or as one unit. Diddy Kong can ride on Donkey Kong's back and hop off whenever he pleases, allowing novice players to ride on Donkey Kong's back through more challenging areas of the game.*
• Hidden items, puzzle pieces and other surprises are found all through the jungle. Spell out K-O-N-G by the end of each level to earn an extra bonus.
• Motion controls give players a real feeling of control. Players move Donkey Kong using the Control Stick on the Nunchuk controller and can shake the Wii Remote controller to make Donkey Kong slap the ground.
• Vibrant colors, beautiful graphics and fun characters draw players in. Even people who have never played a Donkey Kong game before can pick up a controller and start collecting loads of bananas.
• Every level offers new fun and new challenges. Sometimes Donkey Kong is running through the jungle, sometimes his action takes place on a tropical beach and other times he must become a master of timing as he jumps chasms in a mine cart.

Nintendo sent over a fact sheet for Donkey Kong Country Returns from Retro Studios, and it looks like our ape hero has lost his bananas. In the game, animals on Donkey Kong Island are being controlled by evil Tikis and have raided Donkey Kong’s Banana Hoard. You are then tasked with getting your fruit back through platform play, and Diddy Kong helps you along the way with his backpack full of Peanut Pop Guns and a jet pack. Two players can go into co-op mode, one as Donkey, one as Diddy and navigate the levels separately or as one unit. Diddy can ride on Donke’s back and hop off whenever he pleases, as well.

Spell out K-O-N-G by the end of each level to earn an extra bonus, move Donkey using the Nunchuk and shake the Wii Remote to make Donkey slap the ground. It’s out this holiday for Wii, and you can get a taste of what’s to come in the trailer below:

Nintendo's E3 lineup was soaked in nostalgia, but it appears that Donkey Kong Country Returns won't be strictly sticking to series tradition. While its visual style and gameplay looks extremely familiar to the SNES classics, water levels will stay in the past. Kensuke Tanabe is a Nintendo manager working with Retro on the title and stated:

That the old water stages felt slow... It just wasn't the kind of gameplay we were looking for.

In the interview with Kotaku, he also shoots down the possible return of crocodile enemies. It appears that King K. Rool will be completely replaced by the new Tiki bad guys. Luckily, they have the same propensity for banana theft. Nothing drives a story forward like banana theft.

Nintendo's nailed a date for Donkey Kong Country Returns. That date is December 3, meaning that DK will roll onto shelves just in time to be snapped up for Christmas. The Retro Studios-developed platformer was unveiled at E3 in June along with an announcement trailer, we highly recommend you see if you haven't already.

If, like us, you're worried that Donkey Kong Country Returns will be ruined by Nintendo's new-age kid-friendly tendencies, don't worry; the new game looks every bit as wicked as the originals. Those Super NES classics kicked your ass. Hard. They were devilish. Evil. That's what we want, Nintendo - more like that.

There's one last feature up Retro's sleeve and that's the Super Guide. Essentially the "win" button, if you die eight times in a level your friendly checkpoint pig will pop up and suggest using this function. Designed for levels that are really, really, ridiculously hard for you to conquer, the Super Guide will have Super Kong, a white version of Donkey Kong, play through the level for you. The catch is that none of the bananas, banana coins, puzzle pieces or KONG letters will be added to your collection. You don't just have to watch though, once Super Kong passes the area you've been having problems with you can jump in and play as him to finish off the level.

There's a little secret that Nintendo and Retro kept under their hat until late in the game. I would have never expected the Super Guide to return for this title, but the implementation seems to make perfect sense. Thanks to Austin for the heads up!

Donkey Kong Country was a rock hard 2D platformer and one look at this new trailer will be enough to warn you that you're in for a tough ride when you play Donkey Kong Country Returns. Sure it has a Super Guide but unlike with New Super Mario Bros. Wii it looks like you may have to use it this time. Donkey Kong Country Returns is out in the UK today, and if you've already played it you'll know it's surprisingly challenging. One minute you're in Cranky's shop spending your hard-earned banana coins to buy 20 lives and the next you're perilously close to the dreaded Game Over screen. Basically, you'll lose lots of lives and need to play some sections over and over again, particularly if you want to get all the collectibles. Retro Studios senior designer Mike Wikan said during the latest Iwata Asks interview:

I thought it was extremely important that the game be challenging. When this project began, I played the Super NES version again and was a little irked at how hard it was. I only remembered that it was fun. I thought it's really important to make the game tough, but in a good way. I wanted to make a game that was not simply difficult, but possessed a kind of difficulty that made players want to try it again. I thought it was important that, rather than make players angry, the game makes players feel that even if they fail, they will be able to jump better next time.

Fellow senior designer Kynan Pearson added:

It's a game with broad appeal that all sorts of people can play, so I thought we needed to keep that approachability. At the same time, I thought it's important the game be a little difficult.

For inexperienced gamers, Donkey Kong Country Returns will be difficult, perhaps frustratingly so. Thankfully then, the game makes use of Nintendo's Super Guide, a handy autopilot feature that lets you leapfrog challenging sections. Here's our Donkey Kong Country Returns review.
