Need for Speed: The Run's story-driven solo campaign can be completed in little over two hours, reviews have claimed. US site Game Trailers is one such critic to point to the surprisingly short single-player length, but reassures fans that may sound short but keep in mind that time doesn't include cut-scenes, retries or menus. As one quick witted forum users pointed out, it doesn't include toilet breaks or meals either.

Need for Speed: The Run hits North American shops today, with the official UK release due this Friday, November 18. Reviews have been mixed, with scores ranging fro 8.5's to much lowever 5/10's, although most seem to agree that The Run won't provide quite as many hours of entertainment as previous NFS games. One aspect of the racer that does look to provide hours of entertainment is the excellent Challenge Series mode, which is a bit like Hot Pursuit with Frostbite visuals. Read our hands-on for more.

Electronic Arts has released the launch trailer for Black Box Games' upcoming racing sequel Need for Speed: The Run which for once lets you get out of the car. The official word:

From the Golden Gate to the Empire State — Compete in The Run, an illicit race across the most iconic and treacherous roads from San Francisco to New York. There are no rules and no allies in the cities, deserts, mountains and canyons that stand between you and the finish line.

In Need for Speed The Run, you'll weave through dense urban centers, rocket down icy mountain passes and navigate narrow canyons at breakneck speeds, all the while evading a relentless police force prepared -- and willing -- to use lethal force to take you down.

EA has confirmed the release of a new 'Signature' DLC car pack for Need For Speed The Run. The car pack will feature nine new cars, all modified to insane levels ranging from a 'Venom' edition of the awesome Nissan 370Z to a 'Falken' Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0. The DLC will be released for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions on December 20. EA makes no mention of price. Here's the full list of cars followed by a trailer showing them off:

A new update for the PC version of Need For Speed: The Run goes live today, bringing with it some new content, publisher EA has announced. As well as the various fixes and enhancements listed at the bottom of the story, the patch also includes the extra cars from last month's Signature Edition Booster Pack DLC.

General:

• 30 FPS cap is disabled when v-sync is set to OFF in advanced display settings
• Miscellaneous fixes for gamepad and peripheral support
• Tweaked reset behavior for a number of tracks in The Run where resets seemed too close to the main race route

Single Player:

• When players go off track, they will be reset back onto the track instead of at the last checkpoint. Crashes will still result in a reset to the last checkpoint.
• Fixed issue where Autolog split time HUD would sometimes disappear after a vehicle reset

Challenge Series:

• Updated car images will now be displayed in Challenge Series loading screen

Multiplayer:

• Added Quick Match option from multiplayer menu
• Players now have the option to mute VOIP of other players in multiplayer sessions
• Reduced unrealistic behaviors when multiplayer opponents drive off-road or collide with world objects
• Fixed issue where sometimes icons wouldn't display for playgroup members in the intermission screen
• Animated recently completed solo and group objectives in the intermission screen
• Display active objectives in the pre-race loading screen
• Tabs will now auto-cycle during the intermission screen, manually tabbing between screens will disable the auto cycling
• Countdown timers in MP will flash orange in the last 5 seconds
• Will still display session rewards for players that finish the last race in a session after all other players have left the session
• Hide the empty race results and session standing tabs in the intermission screen when joining a race in progress

Autolog:

• Gallery - Fix to extend scroll bar for entire length of gallery
• News - Fixed alignment of news list and top of news image
• Friends - Now displays whether a friend is online, joinable or offline in player badge
• Friends - Added option to join a friend's multiplayer session from the friends list, if friend is in a joinable session
• Photo - Now displays the proper error message when a photo upload fails due to being out of space

EA is keen to create a feature film based on the Need for Speed series. A script is currently being shopped around Hollywood, according to Variety, which says the publisher is eager to capitalise on film studios seeking their own The Fast and the Furious-alike.

Warner Bros, Sony and Paramount are said to be interested in securing film rights to the racing property for a figure in the low seven figures. Last November's decent Need for Speed: The Run was the 18th game in the series, and we're expecting the next one to release later this year.

Guildford studio Criterion will reveal the next Need For Speed Most Wanted game at Electronic Arts' E3 press conference, the publisher has confirmed. The next game in the Need For Speed series will pick up on the 'Most Wanted' IP, as opposed to the 'Hot Pursuit' extension that Criterion had worked on in previous years.

A world-first video demonstration is due next week at EA's E3 press conference, which takes place on Monday, June 4th (4pm eastern time, 1pm pacific time, 9pm British Standard time). Electronic Arts said:

The press event will feature never-before-seen video and gameplay for the biggest titles EA will unveil this year.

The publisher claims that it will also reveal as-yet-unannounced games for the first time, including a new social title for Facebook. The first promotional image of the game can be found below.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted will have the best of both Burnout Paradise and Hot Pursuit whilst keeping its own identity, Criterion’s Matt Webster has said. Webster told Videogamer at E3:

It’s everything we know about open-world driving, just piling it together. All the best shit about Burnout and everything we did in Hot Pursuit, we’re just smashing them together.

Webster added that Most Wanted has been inspired by every game its ever developed. He added:

[Most Wanted] is what we think an open-world game should be. Hot Pursuit was about beautiful cars and epic drives, and so it didn’t match what we wanted to do in that game. This time it totally does. Everything that we’ve ever done comes to pass here. It’s a Criterion game so everything that we’ve ever done comes to play. We always say that each game we do is a reflection of us at the time, but of course, you’re going to be influenced by what we’ve done in the past and all the stuff we had fun with.

You remember the journey that we went on with Paradise. The game that we shipped was absolutely not the game that we ended up with. And with Hot Pursuit we learned a bunch of other things. This is the best of everything.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted launches in the US on October 30 and November 2 in Europe for PS3, 360, Vita and PC.

Criterion is revisiting Need for Speed: Most Wanted because the basic premise lends itself so well to the social opportunities afforded by Autolog. Criterion’s Hamish Young told Player Attack:

We looked through the entire history of Need for Speed, and we came across the game. We really loved the premise of being the ‘most wanted’ amongst your friends, which is a really powerful idea. We really liked that. This game is all about being the most wanted among your friends.

As a result, Most Wanted ramps up the multiplayer and social aspects. Young noted:

We’ve got a brand new set of online modes, like playlist based online. Competitively and co-operatively. If you beat your friends, you earn speed points, which takes you up the Most Wanted list.

Young noted that Criterion has built upon Autolog, EA’s compelling asynchronous multiplayer system which occasionally destroys friendships.

Most Wanted is due on PC, PlayStation 3, Vita and Xbox 360 – as well a in iOS form – in October.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted will feature the second generation of Autolog, developer Criterion's nifty social racing service. Autlog 2.0's news feed will be available to view online, with a variety of functions planned. You'll be able to browse race recommendations, tag events to play when you next boot up the game, plus share and comment on pictures. It sounds similar to EA's online Battlelog service, which tracked all sorts of statistics from Battlefield 3. According to EA's Need for Speed website:

Autolog 2.0's recommendations can now be customised to feature preferred rivals. You'll be able to turn down the volume on a particular friend and focus the action on someone you absolutely must beat.

Autolog 2.0 ill seamlessly track a variety of stats, including top speeds, jump distances and speed camera hits. All of this contributes Need for Speed points to your Most Wanted score: the number used to rank you against your friends.

The list below basically reads like a what’s what of the vroom generation which doesn’t mind spending $5.00 a gallon for gas. EA has announced a trio of pre-order bonuses for Need For Speed: Most Wanted, available when you pre-order the game from selected retailers. Each of the three bonuses contain an exclusive livery and two car modifications, and will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. It isn't yet known which retailers will carry each pack.

• Speed Pack: The Caterham Superlight R500 in the exclusive Satin Black livery, featuring the Track Tyres Modification for improved road handling, and the Lightweight Chassis Modification allowing players to reach mesmerizing speeds.
• Strike Pack: The Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series in the exclusive Satin Black livery, featuring the Power Pack Powertrain Modification for an engine tuned for torque, acceleration and the ability to reach breakneck speeds, and the Re-inflating Tyres Modification making it easier to survive and counter rivals’ attempts to slow players down.
• Power Pack: The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor in the exclusive Satin Black livery, featuring the Reinforced Chassis Modification for taking increased damage, and the powerful and violent Nitrous Dump Modification for making tight jumps and powered up takedowns.

In addition to the retailer-specific bonuses, anyone who pre-orders the game will also receive the Limited Edition, containing four hours of double speed points and access to two exclusive cars. Matt Webster, executive producer at Criterion Games said:

In Need for Speed Most Wanted, everything players do earn them Speed Points which are used to compete to be the Most Wanted amongst their friends.
