Evolution Studios has unveiled 'the racing game we've always wanted to make', Drive Club, for PlayStation 4. The developer explained:

The game will link to a companion app on smartphones and tablets, where players will have 24/7 unteathered access to their club. The app will also let you set up race challenges and release them into the public for players to complete, or organise huge tournaments of thousands of players. The developer promises visual detail that's 'borderline insane', with detailed car models right down to individual fibers in carbon fiber panels and reflections on the bulbs in the headlight arrays. Gameplay shown revealed the player getting into the seat of a Koenigsegg in a first-person view, and starting the engine before racing against others.

Drive Club - New developer video released.

Evolution Studios has released new Drive Club footage via the latest instalment of the "Conversations with Creators" PS4 video series. Drive Club is a multiplayer-focused next-gen racer in which players can compete in both real time and asychronously. It was announced alongside the PlayStation 4 in February. The PlayStation 4 exclusive is expected to be a launch title for Sony's next-gen console, though no release date has been confirmed. Community manager Jamie Brayshaw wrote on the PlayStation Blog:

A racer that keeps you constantly connected with the community - a connected community of clubs that's not about posting status updates at every opportunity, but about sending and playing challenges and always racing together to achieve more.

Drive Club - PS Plus Edition will charge for extra cars, tracks.

Drive Club PS Plus Edition will utilise a free-to-play business model, Sony has confirmed. Speaking with Digital Spy, Drive Club design director Paul Rutchynsky said that the PS Plus version offers the same core experience, minus some of the content. He said:

Praising the free-to-play business model, Rutchynsky believes it will help generate interest in Drive Club, he added:

Rutchynsky also revealed that Drive Club will be supported with new competitions, challenges and content months after its launch. When asked whether new content would be free or paid, Rutchynsky said that it would be a combination of the two.

The PS4 will be available this holiday season for $399 (£349).

Drive Club - PS Plus version won't have all cars and tracks.

Paul Rustchynsky, Alex Perkins and Col Rodgers of Evolution Studios discussed some key aspects of the PS4 launch title DriveClub, including the differences found in the PS Plus version. Drive Club will launch alongside the PS4 at retail, as both a digital download and as a PS Plus version free to PS Plus subscribers. During a Q&A with PlayStationer, Evolution Studios explained the differences found in the PS Plus version. They explained:

The team explains that Drive Club is all about socialising, and the PS Plus version gives us to the biggest open community, day one. The PS Plus version may be missing some tracks and cars, but the team said:

During the Q&A other topics were discussed, including the fact that while the focus is not on damage - Evolution Studios says they are not making Burnout - the cars will nonetheless take damage and physically deform. The effects of weather were touched on, though the team had nothing to divulge. The game will, however, continue to evolve long after its release. The team said:

Drive Club will be a PS4 launch title alongside Killzone Shadow Fall and Knack.

Driveclub - Dev debating over 60fps target.

Driveclub developer Evolution Studios hopes to hit 60 frames-per-second with its next-gen racer, but may never quite reach there. That's according to Driveclub's art director Alex Perkins, who told Official PlayStation Magazine UK that there's an ongoing internal debate over whether or not frame rates should be sacrificed for extra graphical detail. He explained:

Games like Gran Turismo on PS3 opted to target 60fps at the expense of environmental detail. But at Evolution Studios - the developer of the MotorStorm series - rich environments would seem to be somewhat a priority. Perkins said:

Driveclub, along with fellow first-party titles Killzone: Shadowfall and Knack will be PlayStation 4 launch titles.

Drive Club - Developers discuss handling and lighting.

Members of the Drive Club development team have been discussing the game's handling system and lighting effects. In an interview with the Guardian, game director Paul Rustchynsky said that the cars should feel authentic, as they're created using real data imported from car modelling, but that they won't be 100 per cent realistic. He explained:

Meanwhile, technical art director Alex Perkins described the game's new lighting system, detailing how the weather and cloud cover can dramatically change the mood and feel. He said:

Sony has confirmed that Drive Club will be a PS4 launch title, along with Knack and Killzone Shadow Fall.

Sony has released a new batch of DriveClub screenshots designed to show off both the game's damage modelling and some of the exclusive cars you'll get when you pre-order the racer. If you pre-order the game from Amazon you'll get a Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Coupe Black Series car for free.

    Driveclub - PS4 Gameplay from Gamescom 2013.

CVG's Gamescom team is hitting the show floor hard to get hands-on with the next-gen titles available at the event; we managed to spend some time with Evolution Studios' DriveClub, tearing around the racetrack in an Aston Martin Vanquish.

Driveclub - Dev clarifies some free edition contents, no split-screen for either version.

Driveclub developer Evolution Studions has posted some new details on the free edition of its racer on NeoGAF, confirming that it’s the full game minus a few cars/tracks. Posting in this NeoGAF thread, Driveclub’s design director Paul Rustchynsky spooled off the following answers to user questions:

    • There will be a discount to upgrade to the full digital edition from the PS+ edition, but prices won’t be announced for a few more weeks yet.
    • When you upgrade from the PS+ Edition you get the full digital edition which doesn’t require a PS+ subscription.
    • You can earn the platinum trophy in the PS+ Edition, remember its the full game minus a few cars/tracks.
    • Rear-view mirrors as you’ve seen in the latest direct feed footage just show the environment – you’d be surprised how limited the visibility in the mirrors are for a lot of these cars and for gameplay purposes we want to give the best visibility.
    • We are working on a photo mode, but that’s all I can say about it right now.
    • You guys wanted uncompressed footage and obviously the PS4 capture utilises some form of video compression to ensure the videos aren’t ridiculously large (the raw direct feed videos we captured are 6GB for 2 minutes of footage).
    • We’re working on alternative solutions for trying to get the highest quality vids up online quickly by ourselves.
    • No Split-Screen I’m afraid

Driveclub is a PS4 launch tite dropping November 15 in North America and November 29 across Europe.

DriveClub - Won't be ready for PS4 launch?

A rumor has surfaced that Evolution Studios' PlayStation 4 launch game DriveClub has been delayed to next spring. The Same Coin is citing an anonymous source, and Kotaku has since come out to receive confirmation of the report from a person familiar with goings-on at Sony.

Although it's not necessarily a sign that this is indeed accurate, there is a Sony event in San Francisco today which was going to have DriveClub included among the games shown. It's been removed due to a scheduling conflict, according to Kotaku. We have reached out to Sony for a comment about the rumor, but you know how these situations tend to play out. DriveClub design director Paul Rustchynsky wrote on Twitter:

DriveClub - New clips demonstrate PS4 sharing.

Three brief clips from recently delayed PS4 racer DriveClub have been uploaded to Facebook using the console's 'Share' functionality. The clips were uploaded by the game's developer Evolution Studios to show off some of the console's social media capabilities as well as the progress being made on the game. Demonstrating a mountain race in Norway, a wheel-to-wheel race against AI opponents in Scotland and a 'stampede' in Napal, the videos are short, but Evolution promises a full race will be shared online soon.

Driveclub - PS4 trailer promotes togetherness.

Driveclub developer Evolution Studios has published a new Driveclub trailer, this time promoting the values of teamwork and togetherness. It’s quite sweet when you stop to think about it. The clip shows off plenty of racing and slick cars, focusing mainly on the BMW,but no raw gameplay.

Driveclub - Early 2014 release date could be soon going by this ERSB rating.

It looks like delayed PS4 racer Driveclub could be coming out fairly soon after being rated by the ERSB. That’s obviously not a cast iron guarantee but it’s a fairly good sign that Sony is in the last stages of release plans. The ‘E for everyone’ rating describes Driveclub as a racing simulation game in which players drive real world cars around international race tracks. Players can compete in variety of race series, time trials, and drift challenges.

There is mention that it, includes online features that may expose players to unrated user-generated content. Presumably that’s related to the social side of things – clan and race creation for example. Originally a launch title, Driveclub was delayed in October. Sony stated the date was pushed back to realize the next-gen racing vision. News of the delay came directly from Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida who added:

There’s still no word on whether it will still be a free game on PS Plus as was originally intended at launch.
