After a mere 13 years, Sony has announced a sequel to the 2002 vehicular combat game, Hardware: Online Arena. The PS2 title was one of the earliest PlayStation games designed exclusively for play over the nascent PlayStation Network.

Hardware: Rivals comes from Connected Content Group, a rather blandly titled internal development group at Sony Network Entertainment. Some of the design team from the original game are involved in this new version. Vehicles range from fast buggies to heavy tanks, and there will be regular live events to keep the community perky. The announcement on the PlayStation blog reads:

A beta is promised in the near future. Meanwhile, here's what it looks like in motion.

Hardware: Rivals - Coming exclusively to PS4 on January 5, 2016.

The vehicle combat title Hardware: Rivals has been confirmed for a January 5 release. The sequel to 2002’s Hardware: Online Arena was announced in September, and following October’s beta, variosu tweaks and additions have been made, including a new map and two new vehicles – the Sledgehammer tank and Nomad FAV.

There will be four vehicles total, with a multitude of skins and add-ons to customise them to your heart’s delight. You can also mess with the weapons and handling to fine-tune your playstyle. According to today’s post over on the PlayStation blog, a host of new content will be available after launch, with new maps, vehicles, and game modes.
