Mirror's Edge 2 - EA Confirms Mirrors Edge Catalyst, With More Info Coming At E3.

Some savvy internet sleuths have uncovered a breadcrumb trail that may lead to the title of the next Mirror's Edge game. NeoGAF member Rösti tracked down a trademark filing in Europe for Mirror's Edge Catalyst by a J A Kemp, a patent and trademark firm that has a history of working with Electronic Arts. Further sleuthing led to the discovery of a domain name filing of the same name by EA.

The timing would align with an official announcement for the game at E3 next week. The game is currently slated for a 2016 release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

    Update:

EA has confirmed that the next Mirror's Edge game is titled Mirror's Edge Catalyst. As you might have guessed with a release planned for this fiscal year (ending March 31, 2016), we'll be getting more information at E3. The publisher pushed live a new website for the game, complete with how Faith is conceptualized to appear. Based on the "tattoo trailer" from E3 2013, we already suspected this game is about Faith's earlier years. We know a bit more thanks to a letter from producer Sara Jannson. Jannson writes:

Mirror's Edge Catalyst - Real Life Time Trial.

Parkour always looks cool, especially the Mirror’s Edge flavour. You’ve probably seen similar videos when Mirror’s Edge was first released. Parkour runners of all types strapping in a GoPro to go jumping from one rooftop to another.

It’s the same with Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, and it’s not even out yet. Despite that, the video below seems to be officially sanctioned, and very well done. It’s the work of four runners, complete with top-notch editing, visual/sound effects, as well as menu and HUD colours. It’s directed and choreographed by Claudiu Voicu.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst - DICE talks multiplayer and open world.

We stopped by the Mirror's Edge Catalyst stand at EA's E3 booth today and had a good session with the game. Full impressions will follow, but it's fair to say that we were impressed by what we saw. In the meantime, here's a quick chat that we grabbed with the game's design director Erik Odeldahl, where we ask him about lots of stuff that he can't quite yet answer but sort of hints that we're on the right track.

There's no co-op gameplay, for instance, although multiplayer elements of some sort will be included. Catalyst's open world will also unlock over time, Odeldahl continued, which may or may not be tied into the progression of main character Faith's own skills.

You will be able to upgrade her abilities, although this won't be through simply equipping a new item. (There will be no shoes with springs in to create a higher jump). Watch below for Odeldahl's responses to the rest of our questioning and we'll have full impressions of the game for you in the near future.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst - Has Absolutely No Gun Fights.

Mirror's Edge: Catalyst does not allow the player to hold or use a gun, ever -- there is no gun combat, so when Faith disarms an enemy soldier, his gun goes on the ground and stays there. When asked why Mirror's Edge is ditching ballistic encounters, DICE General Manager Patrick Bach said:

    Mirror's Edge: Catalyst:

Bach admits that it would be very easy for DICE -- a studio known for shooters such as Battlefield -- to rely on weaponry as an alternative, as the original Mirror's Edge did. He said:

Faith's abilities in Catalyst downplay the guns of her enemies as well. While moving rapidly, attacking enemies, or traversing the world, Faith enters a flow, as DICE describes it, and it makes her invulnerable to bullets. If you're moving, guns don't exist in the player's mind.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst - Begins with Faith being released from jail, DICE reveals.

The story for Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst, which is due out next year, begins with Faith being released from jail according to an interview with EA DICE’s general manager. Patrick Bach, who was speaking to The Guardian, confirmed that Catalyst would serve not only as Faith’s origin story but also as more of a reboot than anything else. He said:

Bach added that the Swedish studio was still proud of the original Mirror’s Edge, but the way the game was written and developed made the pathway to a sequel rather difficult. He said:

The preview also revealed that the game’s story begins with Faith being released from jail, with the free-running heroine teaming up with The Runners shortly thereafter. It’s not a great deal beyond what we already saw in the E3 footage, however, and it also doesn’t say whether any of the characters in the 2008 release will return.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst - Open-world meant redesigning Runner Vision.

The original Mirror's Edge may have set you leaping, sliding and wall-running your way across a bright and breathtaking city, but it was a distinctly linear experience. Each level was a finely calibrated rat maze, designed to keep you pumping those legs from point A to point B. Now that the series has gone fully open-world for its upcoming sequel, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, the entire game's design ethos (including Faith's Runner Vision) had to be completely reconstructed.

In the latest issue of Edge, game design director Erik Odeldahl discusses the challenges of taking Faith on a open jaunt and how the team dealt with this arduous task. Odeldahl said:

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst - Videos demonstrate the game’s combat and movement.

Two videos for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst have been released giving you a look at the game’s combat and movement. According to the official website, players can build momentum to reach top speed and do daring jumps between rooftops or stylish slides through tight spaces. One of the moves Faith can pull off is Quickturn, which provides a rapid 180 or 90 degree turn.

The first video shows how to zip down wire lines, balance on ledges, run vertically and horizontally on any wall and use pipes to swing to other spaces and areas. Faith can also use hi-tech hardware and gadgets such as the Mag Rope and Disruptor. In combat, attack types range from fluid to heavy punches to force enemies off balance or to gain an advantage when stunned. Players can build up and maintain Focus by constantly moving. When in Focus, enemies can’t hit Faith, but losing Focus makes enemy attacks a greater threat to her health level.

When completely focused, Faith goes into a a Flow state which heightens awareness state of awareness which will allow various attacks in new and more powerful ways to be pulled off. No matter what circumstances you find yourself in while playing as Faith, always use the environment to your advantage.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is set for a May 24 release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
