Ubisoft announces The Crew, an online action-driving game they call revolutionary in the works at Ivory Tower in collaboration with Reflections for release next year on Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Here's the announcement:

Today at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Ubisoft revealed The Crew, a revolutionary online action-driving game developed exclusively for Xbox One®, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment system and for PC, to be released early 2014. Development of The Crew is being led by Ivory Tower, a team of racing game veterans and an exclusive partner to Ubisoft, in collaboration with several Ubisoft studios including Reflections Ltd., a Ubisoft studio, best known for its work on the Driver franchise.

The Crew propels gamers on a reckless ride through a massive open world version of the United States of America, brimming with exciting challenges and diverse terrain - from city to suburb, county to county, state to state, coast to summit. The Crew redefines the level of freedom players experience in a driving game by offering a playground of unprecedented scope in which any driving fantasy can be realized: street, dirt, cross-country, circuit and more. To bring that vision to life, The Crew leverages the capabilities of new hardware to connect players online like never before. The Crew’s persistent online world is populated by other real players, meaning any other car is a potential rival or ally, and naturally fostering both competition and cooperation among players. This living world provides a tailored experience to a new generation of gamers, as each player is given the choice to play alone, or to team up on-the-go with friends to accomplish collective challenges.

Finally, players can continue to interact with The Crew game world on a second screen via the companion application that will be available soon for iOS and Android devices. The Crew companion app will allow for peripheral, complementary experiences, providing a more intricate player experience overall. Julian Gerighty, creative director, Ubisoft said:

    The Crew - 15 Screenshots.

You probably all know that we're following Ivory Tower's first title The Crew as it stands as the spiritual successor to Test Drive Unlimited, a flawed but nonetheless extremely enjoyable game back in 2006. After Germany and Cologne, Ubisoft's upcoming title is at PAX in Seattle this week so here is a bunch of images of the game.

    The Crew - 5 Screenshots.

A new - small - image of The Crew popped out on the Internet so, as we forgot to post some of the images of the cars which have been announced so far, here's a new short news article about the game.

The Crew - In-game New York City comparable to GTA’s Liberty City in size.

The Crew, which is in development at Ivory Tower, will contain a rather large open-world for you to race about in – it does take you across the United States after all, which is a large bit of land. Speaking with VG247 at gamescom, creative director Julian Garrity used Grand Theft Auto’s Liberty City as an example of how large a city such as New York City will be in the game. Garrity explained:

The Crew will hit PC, PS4 and Xbox One early 2014.

The Crew - Ivory Tower explains why it’s not current-gen, praises consistency across next-gen formats.

The Crew developer Ivory Tower has opted to bring its ambitious open-world racer to PC and next-gen consoles rather than current-gen systems. Speaking with CVG, creative director Julian Garrity was asked if The Wii U’s hardware ability, network capability or sales has seen Ubisoft skipped it in favour of next-gen formats. He said:

Garrity was then asked why The Crew is coming to PS4 and Xbox One, when surely the industry’s technical understanding of current formats is at its peak – seeing as we’re at the cycle’s end. He replied:

The Crew - Delayed to mid-2014, at least.

Ubisoft has delayed The Crew to launch in Q2 of fiscal year 2015, which runs from July 2014 to September 2014, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in an investor call today. It was originally scheduled to launch in early 2014. The Crew is Ubisoft's open-world racing game for next-gen systems. Guillemot said in a press release:

    The Crew - 1 Screenshot.

The Crew was originally planned for an early 2014 release but Ubisoft announced its delay a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, images and videos concerning the game are pretty rare, so when we saw that the official Facebook page of the game had released a single new screenshot, we couldn't wait to share it with you guys.

    The Crew - 1 Screenshot.

The Crew has kept a low profile for a few months now, so when a new image appears on the game's Facebook's page, we are pretty happy to add it to our database.

    The Crew - 1 Screenshot.

Just a few days after releasing a single screenshot, Ubisoft and Ivory Tower added another image of The Crew to their Facebook page. It would be nice to have more but at least we're getting something.

    The Crew - 6 Screenshots.

We managed to find a few more images of The Crew on their Facebook page. They're not all new but until we get more news from French developer Ivory Tower, it will have to do. We have high expectations for the game, so let's hope it won't disappoint.

The Crew - Release date set for fall 2014.

Ubisoft's online racing game The Crew will release in autumn 2014. The publisher made the announcement Tuesday, after which it distributed The Crew's official gameplay premiere trailer. The video shows a group of racers blitzing through the game's seamless interpretation of the continental US.

The PC, PS4, and Xbox One title was originally set to release in the first quarter of 2014. Ubisoft pushed The Crew back to mid-2014 in October.

The Crew - Will Include Microtransactions For Car Parts.

Yesterday, Ubisoft released a new gameplay trailer for its delayed racing title, The Crew. The game, which is now slated for fall 2014 on PC and new-gen consoles, will be blending the traditional retail model with mobile-style in-app purchases. Commenting to Videogamer, Ubisoft confirmed:

Ubisoft says players won’t be barred from progressing if they don’t spend money, but it will take more time to advance. The publisher also hasn’t detailed yet how it will prevent the title from becoming a pay-to-win affair.

The Crew - Console beta and 360 version confirmed.

Ubisoft has confirmed that an Xbox 360 version of The Crew is in development as well as the previously confirmed Xbox One, PS4 and PC versions. The surprising announcement confirms that The Crew will not exclusively be a new-gen game, with external developer Asobo Studio (Fuel) working on the 360 version. Geoffroy Sardin, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft said:

Elsewhere, Ubisoft announced that following a successful closed beta for the PC version in July, a console beta is planned for the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game in late September with a limited number of players to be invited to take part.

Ubisoft has announced a The Crew release date of November 11 on all formats, including the newly-announced Xbox 360 version.

Ubisoft has explained why The Crew won't be released on PS3. Earlier this week the publisher announced that the previously confirmed Xbox One, PS4 and PC editions of the open-world driving game would be joined by an Xbox 360 version. Explaining the game's no-show on PS3, a Ubisoft representative told Polygon:

Ubisoft is planning a simultaneous The Crew release date of November 11 on all platforms.
