At the E3 2015 Xbox press conference, Dark Souls III was officially announced with a spiffy trailer featuring the dark fantasy themes the series is known for. Dark Souls III is scheduled for an early 2016 release, and while we didn't get to see any gameplay during the short video reveal, expect to see more over the course of E3 this week.

Dark Souls 3 - Isn't the last in the series, but is a turning point.

From president, and Lord Gwyn incarnate Hidetaka Miyazaki has clarified what was meant by mention of Dark Souls 3 being the final episode of the series. It won't be the last in the series, he said in a roundtable E3 interview, but it will mark a turning point, with future games potentially embracing settings other than the medieval era. Eurogamer were there to hear Miyazaki's comments:

When asked where Dark Souls or future Souls games could be heading in the future, Miyazaki said the following:

After so many fantasy RPGs, it makes sense for From to turn their attentions back to their neglected Armored Core series, or even to something like Tenchu. He didn't explicitly tease the possibility of Armored Souls, or of Even Darker Souls: Stealth Assassins, but those would obviously be very exciting things.

Miyazaki also revealed that he has a co-director for Dark Souls 3: Isamu Okano, who directed Kinect mech game Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor. He'll be handling the day to day duties, Eurogamer say, while Miyazaki will be responsible for DS3's world-building. If you were wondering when the game started development, or how many staff it shares with Bloodborne, Miyazaki has you covered there too:

Dark Souls 3 - Follows closely from Dark Souls 2.

Hidetaka Miyazaki, legendary director of Souls games returns to co-direct Dark Souls 3. He spoke to Famitsu in an interview and talked a little bit about the third game’s design. In the interview, translated by Gematsu, he says that in terms of design, it follows closely from Dark Souls 2, and that they kept the handy things, presumably referring to the second game’s improved menus and the like. As for the combat, it appears to be faster than previous games, but not quite Bloodborne-level. He said:

He added that the game will have slightly less maps than Dark Souls 2, but that each individual map has a much larger scale. Dark Souls 3 is in development for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Dark Souls 3 - Has been in the works for two years.

The Bloodborne team is not responsible for Dark Souls 3. Dark Souls 3 caught us by surprise. Oh, not the inevitable sequel, but word that Hidetaka Miyazaki would be leading the project. Surely it follows a bit too closely on Bloodborne’s heels…?

As it turns out out, Miyazaki worked on both Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 simultaneously, but the rest of the Dark Souls 3 development team didn’t. Speaking to VideoGamer, Miyazaki confirmed that Dark Souls 3 has been in the works for two years with a separate team. He said:

This isn’t super surprising; FromSoftware is a big studio, and more than capable of fronting multiple teams. Moreover, Bloodborne was developed in collaboration with SCE Studio Japan.

Dark Souls 3 is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One in early 2016.

Dark Souls 3 - To have fewer but bigger and more complex areas.

Dark Souls 3's director Hidetaka Miyazaki has explained how the world will be different to the last game in the series, featuring fewer areas but ones that are bigger in size and complexity. He explained that developing the game from the ground up on current generation consoles PS4 and Xbox One - as well as PC - has allowed developer From Software to create more complicated 3D maps. Miyazaki told Digital Spy at E3 2015:

Developing specifically for the latest hardware also allows for new visual effects, including dynamic lighting, clothing and ash effects in the world. Other changes to the game were also discussed. Humanity and systems around bonfires will see adjustments compared to previous games, while bonfire warping will return and be similar to what was seen in Dark Souls 2, which allowed players to jump between any previously accessed bonfire from the start of the game.

Meanwhile, the enemy respawn system will move away from the Dark Souls 2 approach of stopping enemies from appearing in the world after a certain amount of attempts. Miyazaki said:

It will be available in early 2016 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Dark Souls 3 - Everything is designed to kill you in the game.

Dark Souls 3 director Hidetaka Miyazaki has said that everything in the game is designed to kill you. Speaking to VG247, Miyazaki said that despite the increased challenge enemies provide, there are multiple ways to overcome obstacles. He said:

Player characters, for instance, are speedier and more intuitive, while enemies can be lured into attacks by other enemies. He said:

It will be available in early 2016 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Dark Souls III - Gameplay Reveal Trailer.

From Software's highly anticipated grim action-RPG sequel Dark Souls 3 has received its first gameplay trailer at Microsoft's Gamescom 2015 press conference. Showing off a bevy of gruesome bosses and spooky locales, it looks like the Souls series we all know and love with a healthy dose of From's more recent Bloodborne tossed into the mix.

The action looks a little faster than we've seen in past Souls titles, but still quite similar to earlier games. Director of Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne, Hidetaka Miyazaki, is back at the helm of this one after he largely sat Dark Souls 2 out.

Dark Souls 3 - Is Gamescom's Best RPG.

If there's one thing I absolutely love in From Software's games, it's the eerie atmosphere and the utterly beautiful art. It's worth it just because of that and I have no doubt that Dark Souls 3 stay true to that quality. Anyway, just received a press release saying that the upcoming action RPG has been named “Best Role Playing Game” at Gamescom 2015. André Persson, Director of Communication & Events at BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe said:

As confirmed by Namco, Dark Souls 3 is going to be released in early 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.
