The Hitman website announces HITMAN, a new installment in the assassination series coming to Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on December 8th. The back to basics title reflects "the start of a new journey" that developer IO Interactive insists is not a reboot, but will offer some new twists, including elements of a connected online experience. Here's word on that:

The plan includes eventual beta access for preorders on PC and PS4. They offer an announcement trailer and promise a gameplay video today at the Square Enix press conference. Here's word:

Hitman game - Is a high definition sandbox which will be constantly updated.

IO Interactive’s Christian Elverdam just took the stage at Square Enix’s E3 2015 press conference to announce that the new Hitman reboot will be constantly updated with new content based on player feedback, some of which will be time limited and never repeated. Elverdam explained:

Elverdam mentioned locations in Paris, in Italy, and in the markets of Marrakesh. The game was described as a high definition sandbox, where every NPC has a name and freedom matters.

Hitman arrives on December 8 2015.

Hitman - Additional missions will be free.

The new Hitman sounds like an interesting prospect. At the Square Enix press conference, developer Io announced that, after the initial December 8 release, they would continue to expand the game with new missions and locations. That raised a question: How?

It turns out that the answer is free updates. All additional content through 2016 will be available to download at no additional cost, with no DLC or microtransactions. Io boss Hannes Seifert told Videogamer:

Pre-empting concerns, Seifert confirmed that the game won't be Early Access:

Seifert claims that the base game will be bigger than Hitman: Absolution, and that its biggest levels will be way bigger than anything seen in Hitman: Blood Money.

Hitman - Studio head on DLC season passes: the wrong approach for selling games.

Hannes Seifert, the head of IO Interactive, makers of the upcoming Hitman reboot, has slammed the growing trend of season passes as DLC by describing them as the wrong approach that can lead to players feeling like they are being squeezed for cash. Gameplanet quoted Seifert as saying:

Seifert noted that the Hitman reboot would be a one-time purchase that would not ship with any DLC or microtransactions, either at launch or in the future. He proclaimed:

Hitman is due out on December 8 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Hitman - Environments to be six times bigger than previous games in the series.

Fans of huge stealth environments rejoice - the areas within the new Hitman game will be the biggest in the series to date. Developer IO Interactive has so far revealed three of these settings - Paris, Marrakesh and a coastal environment in Italy - with more to be added to the game as time goes on. Lead producer Hakan Abrak told Digital Spy at E3 2015:

There will also be exit point unlocking, with Abrak teasing getaways by chopper or speedboat once a mission in Paris is over. Announced at E3, the new Hitman game will be updated from its digital release on December 8, adding new locations, objectives and targets over the course of 2016.

There will also be live events. For example, over a weekend a secretive high profile target will be added to the Paris area, which requires the community of players to work out who it is and how to dispatch them. Abrak teased:

As well as online elements, it'll be playable offline and have a physical version at retail arriving sometime in 2016.

Hitman - Launches with limited content, but don’t call it Early Access.

When Hitman releases this December, it won’t be the full game you expect. It also won’t be what you would call Early Access. Hitman developers at IO interactive have been trying for a while to communicate to fans what the initial package of the game will include on day one, and what they can expect to see following the game’s launch.

Basically, you buy the game for the full price on December 8 and get a “sizeable chunk” of content. The rest will be added after launch and throughout 2016. This includes new missions that expand the game’s story, contracts, and live events, all included in the price you paid at launch. Naturally, some fans took this to mean the game will launch in a less than ideal state, i.e. Early Access. IO studio head Hannes Seifert says the term implies the game will release in an unfinished state, which is not the case. He told Videogamer:

Seifert added that later content drops won’t cost fans any extra over what they had already paid at launch. He added:

Hitman will be released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Hitman - World Premiere 'Showstopper' Playthrough.

IO Interactive has shown off one of Hitman: No Subtitle's missions, and it's certainly hitting all the right beats after the previous game, Absolution, rubbed almost everyone up the wrong way. A big sandboxy environment! Lots of NPCs! A revamped disguise system! 'Enforcers' will be able to see through individual disguises, while key figures like heads of security will be able to see through all of them. There's also a kickass font being used for the weapon selection menu.

The mission is set at an opulent fashion show, and Agent 47 is there to appreciate some lovely dresses and also to murder a guy. I'm getting serious Blood Money vibes from this, which I suppose is the point.

    Hitman is out in December.

Hitman - Will have one price, no microtransactions, insists Square Enix.

The upcoming open-world constantly-updated Hitman re-imagining expected this December will not be incomplete and won’t nickel-and-dime you to death, insists Square Enix. European CEO Phil Rogers said to Games Industry International:

Rogers also mentioned that Square Enix aren’t in the business of ‘annualising our franchises’. He added:

    Hitman - Delayed to 2016.

Hold up, we have another delay into 2016. IO Interactive has announced that Hitman will be delayed from December 2015 to March 2016 in order to bring more content to the title. They want to expand the game to offer more episodes after release, so they are tweaking the game to allow for the expansion. The company explained:

Phil Rogers, CEO of Square Enix Europe has been quick to assure gamers that their day-one purchase of Hitman will not be an incomplete game. He said:

Hitman will be available digitally (disc-version even further down the road) on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in March 2016.

Hitman - Out March 11, rest of the game in April, May and June.

Hitman is releasing on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, unfinished, on March 11 after being delayed from its December launch. It was always going to release unfinished, though, by design. The Hitman website explains. March 11's launch includes three locations - Paris, Sapienza and Marrakesh - and six campaign missions. Contracts mode offers around 800 targets. Then April, May and June will each see one new sandbox location. They said:

As for buying in, plonking down $60 immediately gets you everything, including beta access (PC and PS4). The $35 "Intro Pack" gets you all the March launch content and if you want, you can upgrade that for an additional $30. Basically, you pay an extra $5 if you don't trust IO from the get-go, provided you do like the game. Or, maybe you do like the game but still feel sated at $35.

Hitman - Will now be released episodically with new pricing structure.

The release structure for Hitman has been changed to an episodic affair, and along with the new release schedule comes a new pricing structure. This explains why it was pulled from the PS Store recently. The game will now be released as a truly episodic AAA game experience, with a major live component.

IO says on March 11, the Prologue Mission and a Paris location will be released, followed by the next location set in Italy during April and then Morocco releasing in May. From then onward, players can expect monthly content updates including three additional locations; Thailand, the US and Japan until the season concludes in Japan later in 2016. Weekly live events and additional planned content will release in between the monthly updates. Hannes Seifert, studio head said:

A new Intro Pack now contains Prologue and Paris levels and will release at the new price of $15 or the regional equivalent. Each subsequent location will be priced at $10 as an add-on item to the Intro Pack. Players can also buy the full game and upcoming content for $60 up front. This includes all of the 2016 content as it’s released along with all live and bonus content.

PlayStation 4 users will be handed exclusive access to The Sarajevo Six which contains six bonus contracts, one of which will be released with each location. In it, Agent 47 travels the world in pursuit of six former members of a paramilitary unit called CICADA in a self-contained side-story. The Hitman beta starts on February 12 on PlayStation 4 and February 19 on PC.
