The new trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider opens on a therapy session between an unnamed doctor and his patient, a hooded woman who is soon revealed as Lara Croft. The young woman seems to be struggling with the aftermath of her trials in the first game, but its clear those trials aren’t over, as the trailer cuts between her therapy sessions and a desperate new survival adventure. In the action sequences, we see her sliding down a mountain and catching hold with her climbing axe, as well as skulking through the shadows to kill an enemy human with her bow. As the trailer closes, the camera pans out to show Lara standing in a massive underground cavern, and an ancient tomb looming in the distance.

It’s clear from the trailer that Crystal Dynamics is hoping to bring the Lara Croft story closer to the “tomb raider” moniker than the first game in the series – a criticism that some fans leveled against the first installment of the reboot. At the same time, it’s great to see that the developer isn’t abandoning the more human and emotional elements that helped the last game stand out.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Rhianna Pratchett writing the sequel.

Rhianna Pratchett will pen the Tomb Raider sequel, it has been announced. Pratchett will write Crystal Dynamics' recently announced Rise of the Tomb Raider, having previously penned last year's Tomb Raider reboot. The studio wrote on twitter:

Following the events of Tomb Raider, Pratchett will explore Lara Croft's inner turmoil and motivations. The author confirmed her involvement earlier this week, but didn't specify her role on the upcoming sequel.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Listed for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Rise of the Tomb Raider have been listed online by Amazon UK. The official Xbox website also lists an Xbox 360 version. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics announced the game last week for release on Xbox One, PS4 and PC during holiday 2015. Asked today if the game is coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 too, a Square Enix UK spokesperson pointed CVG towards the italicised words below, which appeared in last week's official announcement press release:

The studio is also currently working on Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris. Much like its predecessor, 2010's Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Temple of Osiris is an isometric puzzle game designed for co-op play. It's coming soon to PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Will be an Xbox One Exclusive.

Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics announced at Gamescom that the next main entry in the Tomb Raider franchise, Rise of the Tomb Raider, will be an Xbox One exclusive. As you can imagine, fans are less than pleased. One has even gone as far to create a petition to demand that it release on PlayStation as well or face boycott. So yes, this person is calling on boycotting a game for a system he doesn't own. Just let that thought sink in a moment. Crystal Dynamics has posted a bit of an explanation for the move on their blog:

Thus far, all we know is that it will be an Xbox One exclusive in Holiday 2015. This could mean that it will release on the Xbox One first, and then PC and PS4 a few months later, or it could mean absolute exclusivity.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Xbox-clusivity Has a Duration.

Following up on the news that Rise of the Tomb Raider will come exclusively to Xbox, Eurogamer has confirmed with Microsoft's Phil Harrison that this is in fact a timed exclusive which has a duration, meaning it could eventually come to other platforms. When this could happen is unclear, though, as the duration of the deal is not specified. Harrison, who does not bit when asked how long the deal is for explained:

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Yoshida Says He Also Hopes it will go to PS4.

Microsoft's announcement that Rise of the Tomb Raider would be an exclusive Xbox One title surprised many people, including Sony's Shuhei Yoshida. Yoshida told Eurogamer at Gamescom:

Xbox has confirmed that the exclusivity deal is only for a limited time, but we have no idea how long that will last, and if the game will go anywhere after that.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Microsoft is the publisher.

Ever since Microsoft's gamescom exclusivity reveal, there's been plenty of speculation about the state of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Although it was soon found out to be a timed-exclusive, there are still many uncertainties surrounding the deal. A large detail surfaced today that might give some indication as to how everything will play out.

According to a tweet from Xbox marketing head Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft is the publisher of Rise of the Tomb Raider. IP owner Square Enix later confirmed this and added:

It's still up in the air as to what other platforms Rise of the Tomb Raider will come to. Given the fact that Microsoft is publishing the game and likely taking care of marketing and distribution, it's reasonable to assume that PC only is more feasible than PC and PS4. But, Microsoft hasn't yet given any clarification yet, and will likely keep attention focused on its consoles as long as possible.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Details emerge.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is an Xbox One exclusive, but it's an Xbox One exclusive with a duration. There's a good chance that, after that duration has passed, it'll be coming to PC. Given that, I'm going to write about it—and about the new information that's surfaced in the latest issue of Game Informer. I'm also going to be very careful about using Game Informer's exclusive assets. (Don't be fooled. That's not their cover above. That's our own artist's impression of that cover.)

NeoGAF has dug out all the details from the latest issue, and they suggest a game that's progressing nicely from 2013's Tomb Raider reboot. This time around, the game will take place across at least two different locations, with hub areas that are said to be two to three times larger than in the last game.

This time, there's more focus on the environments. Enemies will react to different weather types and times of day, and the environment itself is described as the game's main antagonist. Lara herself will have more tools at her disposal—able to pre-plan before a combat engagement, use different bow types, and distract and lure enemies. There'll also be more puzzles. And tombs.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Will not just take place in Siberia.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will not just take place in Siberia, according to game director Brian Horton. Horton told Game Informer that the game would feature an oasis and won't be completely permafrost. Horton explained:

The game is primarily set in the frozen wilds of Siberia, and will send Lara on a hunt for the lost secrets of immortality.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - puzzles will take you longer to solve.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 timed-exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider will feature a greater emphasis on puzzles than its predecessor, developer Crystal Dynamics has pledged. Fans criticised Crystal's 2013 Tomb Raider reboot for a lack of the series' trademark puzzle-based platforming. Indeed, many of the puzzle sections that were present were entirely skippable - relegated to so-called optional tombs. But in a new interview with Game Informer, creative director Noah Hughes explained that his team had heard the feedback. He explained:

Puzzles will retain the physics-based nature seen in the Tomb Raider reboot, but be centred in more ancient-themed spaces. Outside of the reboot's optional tombs, the main storyline featured puzzles involving more modern areas, such as the cranes and lift sections set within the Endurance ship, and in facilities on the island. Hughes continued:

Crystal will push the difficulty in Rise of the Tomb Raider's secret (read: likely optional) tombs, but also up the rewards found inside to entice more players to take on the challenges.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Will be pushing the boundaries of the Xbox One.

Crystal Dynamics is working hard to ensure Rise of the Tomb Raider is a sight for sore (and bruised and stranded in the wilderness) eyes. Game director Brian Horton spoke appeared on the Game Informer podcast to talk all things Lara. Asked about the difference between the Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of the game, Horton made some bold claims about what the Crystal Dynamics team were achieving. Horton said:

Crystal Dynamics is solely focusing on Rise's Xbox One version, with the 360 version being handled by porting wizards Nixxes. He said:

As for how Rise of the Tomb Raider will push the Xbox One's boundaries, Horton talks about hub areas that are around three times the size of the ones featured in the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot. He also talked up the game's hair. Horton said, sounding more serious than you might expect given the subject matter:

Horton's comments could be misconstrued as the Xbox One already nearing its full potential. If Rise of the Tomb Raider really is pushing against its boundaries though, that says more about the software's optimisation – something development teams will continue to improve at over the course of the generation.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Aim Greater Trailer.

Lara Croft reaches the top of the ice wall after a probably-should-be-dead experience. She has several carabiners attached to her belt. Why didn't she use them on her way up? Granted, it wouldn't have helped if all of her anchor points were attached to the parts of the wall that crumbled away, but it still would have been wise.

The trailer below also invokes the likes of Amelia Earhart and (maybe) Captain Robert Scott, both known for daring to go where few had gone before and losing their lives in the process. More information will be revealed for the timed Xbox exclusive action game at Microsoft's E3 press conference on June 15.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Siberian Wilderness Gameplay.

Nearly 15 minutes of Rise of the Tomb Raider footage have appeared on YouTube. The demo, Siberian Wilderness, follows Lara Croft as she's split up from her adventuring partner, and then tries to survive her harsh freezing conditions by salvaging things from the environment around her. It's a section of gameplay that follows on from the teaser trailer you've probably seen.

Rise of the Tomb Raider has timed Xbox exclusivity, and is due out on Xbox One and Xbox 360 on 10th November.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Coming to PC, PS4 in 2016.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be shedding its Xbox exclusivity next year, coming to PC sometime in early 2016 and PlayStation 4 later on during the holidays, Square Enix just announced.

The title is currently planned for a November 10, 2015 launch on Xbox One and Xbox 360, which gives Microsoft a full year before Lara Croft's latest adventure winds up on a competing console.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Square Enix Says Exclusivity Wasn't Easy.

Many Tomb Raider fans were rather disappointed when Square Enix announced Rise of the Tomb Raider would have a timed exclusivity with Xbox consoles. It was recently announced that the game will have a PC and PS4 release in 2016, but there's a huge risk many won't be interested by that time. Phil Rogers, Square Enix CEO of the Americas and Europe admitted he knew it was a risk and they would disappoint many people. He told the Examiner:

So what made them jump in with Microsoft? It was their passion, Rogers explained:

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Gamescom 2015 Gameplay.

Lots of new Rise of the Tomb Raider footage has emerged from Microsoft's gamescom conference. It all kicks off in the Geothermal Valley, which is described as a massive exploration space that is three times larger than any area Crystal Dynamics has made before.

The game apparently features a new Guerrilla Combat gameplay system, which lets users take out the opposition in unique and interesting ways. There are new aerial takedowns, new stealth kills and a bow that lets you take out two enemies at once. Microsoft also debuted a new tomb-raiding video, which offers a brief look at some of the puzzle tombs that will appear in the game.

The Rise of the Tomb Raider - Sequel hasn't been confirmed yet, but Square Enix is always thinking.

Square Enix has weighed in on the recently-rumoured sequel to Rise of the Tomb Raider. Although it is yet to confirm the validity of the speculation, the publisher says it's always thinking about the franchise's future. The company said in a statement to GameSpot during gamescom 2015:

The rumour first surfaced earlier this week, when a Square Enix executive referred to Tomb Raider as a trilogy - despite there being only two announced games to date. Rise of the Tomb Raider is set to launch this November on Xbox One and Xbox 360, but not until next year on PS4 and PC.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Gamescom Demo.

The Xbox YouTube account has just posted 13 minutes of footage from Rise of the Tomb Raider's Gamescom demo. Of course, as we now know, Rise of the Tomb Raider isn't just coming to Xbox. Lara's enduring struggle to not be bashed or slashed into oblivion will arrive on PC early next year.

The footage will feel familiar to any who played the last Tomb Raider, albeit this time with an actual tomb. My favourite moment is when, on looking at a painting, Lara's Greek rating is increased by +15. That is not how learning Greek works.
