EA's Beat Blog has the announcement that a third Star Wars Battlefront game is in development at DICE using their new Frostbite 3 game engine. They don't use the term reboot this time, but conspicuously have left a three out of the title. A teaser trailer is online with a cinematic that looks like the Battle of Hoth, but neither the announcement nor the trailer offer target platforms for the game or a release date. Here's word:

Star Wars: Battlefront - Could offer huge, epic set-piece wars.

As we saw in the teaser for DICE’s upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront, the frigid ice planet Hoth will appear in the recently-announced reboot. The game already made our list as the biggest surprise of E3 this year, but how exactly the shooter will refashion such a well-known setting remains an open question. EA Labels president Frank Gibeau has addressed this topic and more in a new interview with IGN.

Although details since E3 have been scarce, Gibeau said that DICE’s experience designing the eclectic warfighting scenarios in the Battlefield series will serve the developers well as they dive into the Star Wars mythology. Gibeau said:

But the reboot will also be about finding fresh ideas for Battlefront, according to Gibeau. He said:

We’ve already heard from DICE, again via IGN, that having too much Battlefield DNA in a Battlefront game would be boring, and it remains to be seen just how much the two series will affect each other.

Star Wars: Battlefront - And DICE is match made in heaven.

Star Wars: Battlefront is being revived by DICE and the pairing has made a lot of people happy, especially EA’s Patrick Söderlund, who has shed light on how the Battlefield studio came to work on one of the most regularly requested returns to gaming in years. Speaking with CVG about EA’s E3 conference line-up, Söderlund said:

On the Star War: Battlefront revival, Söderlund revealed that it was almost not happening, and Söderlund added:

Söderlund stated that Patrick Bach and the team at DICE’s Stockholm base is working on the project, and added:

So it’s basically the Star Wars: Battlefront series, developed by DICE, the way DICE wants to develop it.

Star Wars: Battlefront - Release date window is summer 2015.

EA's new Star Wars: Battlefront game is most likely to launch in summer 2015. So said EA CFO Blake Jorgensen during a shareholders meeting today. In a rundown of EA's upcoming major releases, Jorgensen said:

That would cast the game's launch around the same time as the first entry of the new Star War trilogy, which was put into production following Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012. Nothing but confirmation of its development and a small teaser trailer has been revealed of EA rendition of Star Wars: Battlefront.

Star Wars: Battlefront - Is a scary task, DICE exec admits.

The pressures and expectations associated with developing the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront are scary, according to a senior staff member at DICE. The Sweden based studio is currently putting the finishing touches on Battlefield 4, but its next project will mark the rebirth of the Star Wars: Battlefront series. While giving a talk at BAFTA in London, executive producer Patrick Bach explained how DICE ended up with the Battlefront licence and how intimidated the studio felt when offered it. Bach said, as quoted by IGN:

Bach explained that once the studio was put in charge of the project, the mood quickly changed to fear. He explained:

The reboot of Star Wars Battlefront was announced at E3 in August, with a teaser trailer shown during EA's press conference. The game is currently in development at DICE's core Stockholm studio with "veteran" Battlefield developers at the helm.

Star Wars: Battlefront - Confirmed for E3 showcase.

EA's new and largely under-wraps Star Wars: Battlefront game will make a much anticipated appearance at E3, the publisher has confirmed. The game is coming along very well, said EA CEO Andrew Wilson when quizzed on its progress during a financials call on Tuesday.

While the team has still lots of work to go, added Wilson, he went on to confirm that the developer plan to show more of Star Wars: Battlefront at E3 in June, along with multiple other major titles. The reboot of Star Wars Battlefront was announced at E3 in August, with a teaser trailer shown during EA's press conference.

Star Wars: Battlefront - Release date preferably close to Episode VII's.

EA has said it would prefer to release DICE's new Star Wars Battlefront game close to the launch of Star Wars: Episode VII. Last July, the publisher's CFO Blake Jorgensen said the Star Wars Battlefront reboot would most likely come out around the same time as the Star Wars movies start to come out, probably in the summer of 2015.

During EA's third quarter earnings call on Tuesday, the company was asked if the game and movie release date are tied together, and how Battlefront's launch could be affected by changes to the film's schedule. EA Studios executive vice president Patrick Söderlund said:

Star Wars: Battlefront - Due out before this Christmas, will receive same effort from EA as Battlefield.

EA’s chief financial officer, Blake Jorgensen, has revealed during an earnings call that the company and developer DICE will put as much effort into producing and promoting Star Wars: Battlefront as it would with a major Battlefield release.

GameSpot, which reported on the earnings call, added that the game would be released before Christmas this year and would be aligned with the upcoming Star Wars movie, titled The Force Awakens. Jorgensen said of Battlefront:

Star Wars: Battlefront - Playable first on Xbox One.

Xbox One owners will be able to play Star Wars Battlefront first, Microsoft has said. While not unexpected - most EA releases launch five days earlier on Xbox One for members of the EA Access program - it is the first time we have had confirmation that Battlefront will be included. Xbox exec Aaron Greenberg confirmed the fact via Twitter last night:

EA Access costs £3.99 a month and is currently only available for Xbox One. The subscription unlocks a free vault of existing EA games, discounts on future EA purchases and early access to new releases

Star Wars Battlefront - Releases in November.

In case you weren't aware (meaning you are nowhere near social media today), this weekend is the big Star Wars celebration in California. Expect much hype, announcements, trailers, you name it. A certain trailer for an upcoming Star Wars movie has put Vader in an epileptic seizure of happiness.

In addition to the exciting new trailer, EA and DICE have announced that Star Wars Battlefront will release on November 17, 2015. Coincidentally, that's right before the seventh movie releases.

Star Wars Battlefront - Set during original trilogy, has 40 player battles.

Star Wars Battlefront, the upcoming multiplayer shooter from EA, will be set during the events of the original movie trilogy. Based on the conflict between the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance, maps will take place on planets Hoth, Tatooine and Sullest, and allow players to command jetpacks, AT-AT walkers, TIE Fighters, speeders and even the Millennium Falcon in 40 player skirmishes.

The best performing players will be rewarded with the ability to play as Boba Fett and Darth Vader in matches. While the multiplayer game won't feature a campaign, first reports from Game Informer and Eurogamer describe the availability of solo missions and split-screen play, as well as the ability to switch between first and third-person perspectives at will.

It will also feature the new planet of Jakku - which featured in the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer - as a free downloadable update two weeks before the film's December 18 release. Senior producer Patrick Bach told to The AP:

The game is also one of the first in a ten-year-long partnership between EA and Disney. LucasArts digital business vice president Ada Duan said:

Star Wars Battlefront will be created by Battlefield series developer DICE, and will be released for PS4, Xbox One and PC on November 17.

Star Wars Battlefront - Won’t have Battlelog support.

Star Wars Battlefront is not just Battlefield in a Hallowe’en costume, so don’t expect the same suite of features. Star Wars Battlefront is the subject of intense anticipation and curiosity, so it’s not surprising a bunch of rumours have turned up.

One of these rumours suggests that Battlefront will have its own version of Battlelog, the social network service supporting DICE’s Battlefield series, produced by regular Battlelog developer Uprise. According to assistant producer Jesper Nielsen, responding to comments on NeoGAF, that one’s just not true. He said:

Star Wars: Battlefront - Isn’t just a big-budget Battlefield mod.

DICE boss Patrick Bach has promised Star Wars: Battlefront isn’t just a big-budget Battlefield mod, as the game carries the Battlefront title for a reason. Speaking with Eurogamer during Day 2 of the Star Wars Celebration yesterday, Bach said the team stayed true to the core ethos of the Battlefront series by adhering to what fits with the IP. He said:

Bach went on to say the team never had the intention or even had the process of building something which resembles anything it has created before, as that’s not how this game has been built. The demo shown to Eurogamer took place on Endor, one of the more prominent scenes which was shown in the reveal trailer yesterday. On this particular map, the team wanted to recreate the Speeder Bike scene from Return of the Jedi and the mode shown in the demo was called Walker Assault.

During the presentation, Eurogamer noticed familiar Battlefield staples such as Killstreak and Nemesis bonuses, but Bach wouldn’t elaborate on such features. It was revealed yesterday players would be able to customize their characters as much as possible by being able to choose gear, abiities, weapons and gender to allow players to choose their own play style. The customization only goes so far though, as lore characters such as Darth Vader will stay true to the IP. Bach said:

Star Wars: Battlefront will be released from November 17 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is currently available for pre-order through various online retailers including Origin.
