[ut3mods] checklist for directional lights?

Discussion in 'Unreal Tournament 3 newsletter' started by Stephen Favis at 037, Aug 23, 2009.

  1. I was having trouble with the directional lgiht not rendering shadows, any recommendations?
    So far

The skybox does not have cast shadows on, the skylight is set to .1, shadows look okay in UnrealEd, but when played everything looks dark except point lights.

  2. Three possible issues:

    1) I've noticed that some people use DirectionalLight_Toggleable or perhaps
you are using one of the other sub-actors under standard Directional light
actor, which would cause you this problem.

    2) Perhaps you are using some form of streaming level and have your lights
in said level. What happens is if you don't stream in the lighting level
that contains all your lights, the level lighting will break for the level
with the baked lighting maps. I believe each object contains relative data
from each light in the scene that affects it and when they are not present
the baked lighting maps no longer have a true light reference point and
causes the map to need rebuilding. I hope this makes sense.

    3) There is one more issue, the target distance field. Sometimes, if you do
not take a few zeros off of the default number, the light will not show up
    when baked.

Those are the biggest issues I know of. Other than that, there are plenty
of tutorials on UDN.epicgames.com. I hope this helps :p
